Todd, excited to hear that this year there will be a full day session on Tunkwa. I know that it got the unfortunate nickname of "Skunkwa" last year, but it really is a world class lake.

If you've never been to this event and are considering it for the first time, just do it! It's a lot of fun, and you will learn an amazing amount of things.

On that note, Todd can you also sign me up for the masterclass.  Great idea for a fundraiser for the Americas cup teams.

Geoff

Motley Crew has just lost Andy Larkin as a team member due to his European sojourn after the Commonwealth Championships. So we have one, maybe two slots to fill with keen, never-say-die fly-fishers. Current crew consists of Peter Huyghebaert (Capt), John Wilkinson and John Kent. Interested individuals please send me a PM and we can discuss the way ahead. Motley Crew is due for a medal this year!!!!   8)

Todd - Motley Crew is pleased to announce that Mike Briggs of Calgary is once again joining our team for the NALS Championship. As our technical expert, he has developed a new sensor system for the team, which will allow us to detect that slight increase in infrared radiation from those fish that are "hungry", relay their position, depth and direction of travel to our members who will then "clean up".  ;) ;)

Could you please let me know the names of your team members as soon as possible. Alos, I'm hoping that some of your team members will have (or be able to borrow) a boat for this event.

Cheers,
Todd

Do we need a boat for the actual event.?If so thats not a problem. If not we can come out with one. Can we use our pontoons pre fishing?
Title: Re: 2014 North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships - June 18–21, 2014
Post by: Todd Oishi on January 20, 2014, 11:15:25 AM
Yes, pontoon boats are acceptable for prefishing before the competition. Just be sure to give some consideration for the wind - if it's blowing hard.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could bring a boat or 2, as we are relying on the teams to provide at least 2 or 3 boats, as the out-of-town teams that are flying in won't be able to.

Please let me know how many you can supply as well as the size of the motors...

No problem Janos! I decided to open Tunkwa Lake one day earlier, as it'll allow the competitors that are attending the Loch-Style Fly Fishing Masterclass the opportunity to fit in an extra day of practice if they are so inclined...

Yes, I understand Todd! Probably I could use an extra day as well, just I do not think I could change my airplane ticket... I trust my teammates and one day practicing on Tunkwa should be enough. Thanks, Janos

I would think that you'll be fine Janos. I won't be arriving until noon on the 18th, which means that I most likely won't have any practice time on Tunkwa Lake. The nice thing about Tunkwa is the fact that there are fish everywhere in that lake...  :)

You are funny Todd, my knowledge is not even close to yours in fly-fishing and probably I would not need  any practice session on a local lake over here like Patterson Lake :). Yes, I heard that fish everywhere in Tunkwa, also I saw the stats from last year comp :).

Post by: Todd Oishi on January 20, 2014, 08:50:28 PM
Janos, I wouldn't worry too much, as I'm sure that your team mates will be able to provide you with excellent and detailed instructions on the most productive locations to fish, so just follow their recommendations, and those of you boat partners if they have been doing well during their practice sessions...

The fishing was really "off" last year due to the weather system that passed through that region and caused the flooding in Calgary. That being said; I'm certain that you're going to thoroughly enjoy fishing both of these venues!

Yes, I trust my teammates no question about that!!! I just like fishing, more open practice days could mean more fishing for me! You know honey I have to leave one day early, I have to be ready, something like that might work with my wife ;)... Yes, I am getting excited to finally get there I am following this comp probably from the start... See you there Todd! Cheers, Janos

I see there are multiple teams that are short a few staff. If any team can't get a full squad together we would be willing to take on a person as we too are short one teammate at this point. Thanks for your time!

The reason why I ask is that I need a few good action shots or shots with competitors and fish for the website for this event.

Thanks,

Update #1:

Good day everyone,

I'm sending this email to formally announce that it’s time to complete and send in your registration forms (attached to this email) and entry fees for the 2014 North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships. The registration for this event sold-out very quickly for the previous competitions, and we currently have several individuals that have been placed on the waiting list. Please fill out and forward the attached waiver and registration forms, and mail it (mailing address is on the form), along with a cheque for $225.00 - payable to Highland Valley Copper - in order to complete your registration and secure your spot for this year’s event.

It’s essential that every competitor sends in their entry fees before April 30, 2014, as the “Mining for Miracles” organization has graciously offered to match our entry fees dollar-for-dollar IF they’re received on, or before, the 30th of April (as they did for the previous 3 events). We’re really counting on everyone submitting their payments on time so we can maximize the dollars that will be raised for the B.C. Childrens’ Hospital Fund, so please don’t delay, and send your registration forms and cheques as soon as you receive this email!

Please take a moment to view and bookmark the website that I’ve created for the North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships: http://www.flyfishingchampionship.com/index.html . Updates and news will be posted on this website, so please check in from time to time. There is also a discussion forum that I set up on The Innovative Fly Fisher Forum that is dedicated to discussions, updates, and questions about the 2014 North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships:  http://innovativeflyfisher.com/forum/index.php?topic=1424.0

At this year’s championship, Highland Valley Copper will be providing a lunch on Thursday, June 19th at Tunkwa Lake Resort (competitors are responsible for providing their own breakfast on that day), and will be providing a delicious breakfast and lunch at the Trojan Pond on both Friday, June 20th and Saturday, June 21st. The costs of these meals (a total of 2 breakfasts and 3 lunches) are included in your registration fees. The costs for the meals at the Black Bull Pub the Meet & Greet on June 18th and the Awards Banquet on June 21st) are the responsibility of the competitors and are not included in your entry fees (see attached form for the menu and pricing).

We are once again requesting that all of the teams and participants bring an item for the silent auction that will be held at the Awards & Closing Ceremonies Banquet on the evening of Saturday, June 21st. If you wish to receive a charitable donation tax receipt for any of the items that you’re donating for the auction, please bring the original receipt for the value of the product (along with the item) to the Black Bull Pub on the evening of Saturday, June 21st, and submit it to one of the organizers that will be on hand to accept your donations. As well, please remember to bring along your cheque books or cash, and be bid generously for the sake of the Childrens’ Hospital...

About this year’s competition:

First and foremost, this competition is being held so that participants can have fun; enjoy the company of fellow competitors; improve our fishing skills; share techniques; and to celebrate fly fishing. It’s also important that we all strive to minimize any possible negative effect that the competition may have on this fishery. Accordingly; all fish caught in the competition must be handled carefully and safely returned to the water in a timely manner. All fishing is carried out on a catch-and-release basis using barbless or de-barbed hooks.

The competition will consist of five, 3-hour sessions of competition that will be held on Tunkwa Lake (Session 1 and 2) and the Trojan Pond (Sessions 3, 4, and 5) over a period of three days, and in accordance with the FFC rules: http://www.flyfishingcanada.net/docs/FFCAnnualRules.pdf . Competitors will be divided into five letter groups, with each group consisting of one member from each team. All of the groups/competitors will be competing on the same venues for all 5 sessions. Drogues will be provided for the official practice and competition sessions, but we would like to request that all competitors that have a Minn Kota drogue (drift sock) bring them along for the competition, as we are a little short on them at the present moment...

All competitors and their agents will not be allowed to fish the competition lakes for 60 days prior to the competition dates. Tunkwa Lake will be open for official practice on June 16th (Monday), 17th (Tuesday), and 18th (Wednesday). Competitors are responsible for supplying, borrowing, or arranging their own boats for unofficial practice. Boats can be rented from Tunkwa Lake Resort: www.tunkwalakeresort.com

Please note that all privately owned boats must be disinfected at the official cleaning station that will be setup at Tunkwa Lake Resort, and any weeds must be removed from boats, props, and trailers before transporting them onto Highland Valley Copper Mine's properties (please read the attached document that addresses this very important topic).

Transportation to and from Tunkwa Lake and the Trojan Pond is the responsibility of the competitors (maps and directions will be supplied at the Meet & Greet and Captains' Meeting on Wednesday, June 18th).  Competition officials will be on hand to address any and all questions or concerns that might arise during the Captains' Meeting on Wednesday evening during the “Meet & Greet”, which starts at 7:00pm at the Black Bull Pub, but please feel free to email Todd Oishi if you have any questions or concerns before that time. The Draw will be performed at 8:oopm precisely (the captain of each team must be present for the draw).

Olympic style medals will be awarded to the three top teams: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Competitors will also be competing for the individual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. The Team and Individual results will be calculated and posted at the Awards Ceremony Banquet. The Awards ceremony & Banquet will start at 7:00pm on Saturday, June 21st at the Black Bull Pub @ 264 Poplar Drive in the town of Logan Lake

Although your team may already registered and has been placed on the list of participants, please remember that it's very important to mail in your registration form and cheque as soon as possible, in order to guarantee your entry and avoid missing out on this great event.

Official Amendments to the Rules:

1.       The use of three flies is permitted only for the official competition sessions on the Trojan Pond, as the province's "single fly only" angling regulation applies to Tunkwa Lake and all of the nearby, publicly owned waters
2.       18 centimeters has been set as the minimum length for the scoring of points
3.       For measuring purposes; the length will be from the tip of the nose to the tip in the tail (no squeezing of tails)
4.       Each competition session comprises of three (3) hours of fishing
5.       Fishing will be performed from freely drifting boats (loch-style) with anchoring, trailing and trolling of the flies being prohibited
6.       The competition boats will not be equal in size, design, structure and power (speed limitations will be discussed during the Captains' Meeting)
7.       After a coin-toss, each competitor has the right to be in command of the boat for an equal amount of time during each session (90 minutes each)
8.       The competitor in command of the boat will determine whether the drogue is to be used at that moment in time
9.       When in use, the drogue must be attached to the starboard (right) side of the boat
10.   Competitors are required to fish on the port (left) side of the boat, and within their respective quadrants
11.   Both competitors are permitted to man the oars, drogue and motor, but cannot have their flies in the water while the boat is under the power of the oars or motor
12.   It is the responsibility of each competitor to provide and wear their own eye protection and personal flotation device (life jacket)
13.   Each participant is responsible for their own travel to and from all official events and during the practice and competition sessions
14.   The competitor may remove the hook, and must revive the fish and release it, taking care not to damage the fish, as a dead fish is ineligible for scoring of points
15.   The boats will be launched fifteen (15) minutes prior to the start of the session, to compensate for boat and motor designs and to allow adequate time for positioning
16.   Boats may not approach within 50 feet (5 rod lengths) of other boats from which competitors are fishing - except for reasons of safety or necessity when moving to a new location (common sense and courtesy should prevail)
17.   All boats must be disinfected at the cleaning station at Tunkwa Lake Resort, and any weeds must be removed from boats and trailers before transporting onto Highland Valley Copper Mine's properties (please read the attached document that addresses this very important topic)

A List of Frequently asked Questions:

1.       Drogues will be supplied for the official practice and competition sessions
2.       All flies must be dressed on hooks that are either barbless, de-barbed, or have the barb squeezed down flat
3.       A single visible bead may be used on each fly, but may not more than 4 mm in its maximum dimension
4.       All flies must be attached to the leader in such a way that they do not move or slide (loop knots are not permitted and are considered to be illegal)
5.       Neither sinking nor floating devices may be added to fly lines (bobbers, barrel-swivels, split-shot or other weights are not permitted)
6.       Leaders may be knotted or knotless, and tapered or level, and must be continuous for its entire length (tying leader to the bend of the hook is not permitted)
7.       Competitors may have spare fly rods with them, but they must not be assembled nor have the reel attached
8.       48" is the maximum length for all competition nets
9.       Netting of fish must be performed solely by the competitor who caught and wishes to score the fish
10.   A competitor may stand only while netting a fish, and not while playing it
11.   While fishing, competitors must remain seated on the thwart boards, but may use a seat or cushion with a maximum thickness of 10 centimeters above the top surface of the thwart board (back rests are not permitted)
12.   The use of hand-signals, written and verbal communication or radios, phones, and other electronic communication devices are not permitted during competition sessions
13.   Only fish hooked in the mouth area or in front of the rear edge of the gill cover, will be eligible for the scoring of points
14.   Competitors are awarded one hundred (100) points for an eligible fish (over 20cm) and will also receive twenty (20) points per centimeter of length of each eligible fish
15.   The measurement for fish 20 cm or longer will be rounded up to the next complete centimeter for scoring purposes - ie: 23.1cm equals 24cm (fish under 20 cm are ineligible for scoring and should not be rounded up)
16.   If a fellow competitor or competition official determines that a competitor has negligently injured a fish, that fish will not be scored, and the competitor will be penalized the number of points attributable to a fish of minimum valid length (a -500 point penalty)
17.   Fish hooked during a competition session is eligible if it is landed not more than 5 minutes after the session ends
18.   At the conclusion of the session, any fish that are hooked while the flies are in the water or as they're being retrieved back to the boat, are NOT eligible for scoring points
19.   Each participant is responsible for checking the accuracy of their scorecard, ensuring that their fellow competitor has crossed out the unused part of the scorecard and confirming this by signing it at the end of each period
20.   All scorecards must be handed to the sector judge immediately upon the boat arrival to the shore, as competitors are prohibited from leaving the shoreline until they've handed in their scorecards (missing or late cards will be disqualified)
21.   Members of the teams and individual competitors that are awarded first, second and third positions will receive gold, silver and bronze medals respectively

Todd Oishi

This is a very important reminder that your entry fees are due today (April 30th), and must be post-marked and sent into Highland Valley Copper before midnight today.

As the organizer of this event, I am in charge of organizing and running this event, while the staff at Highland Valley Copper are responsible for handling the collection of the fees for the registration and meals, so please do not send the cheques or registration forms (with the meal orders) to me.

Thank-you for your cooperation on this matter, and for your prompt payments!

Cheers,
Todd

Hello fellow snagger's 8)

I am heading up to Leighton for the long weekend and was wondering if anybody else was going to be in the area (Tunkwa). Thought I might head over to Tunkwa and see if anyone would like to practice or just hang some lines before the 19th deadline.

Let me know

I'm pleased to announce that the coaching staff of the Canadian Youth Team will be monitoring the results and assessing the performances of the 6 members of the Canadian Youth Team, as well as their ability to perform and contribute as a member of a team during this competition - with more emphasis being placed on their team spirit and teamwork.

At the conclusion of the championship, 2 or possibly 3 of the youths will be recommended to Fly Fishing Canada's selection committee for a spot on the Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team that will be competing and representing Canada's youth at the 2014 America Cup International Fly Fishing Tournament in Vail, Colorado.

I hope someone hooks some of those transferred fish at Trojan. Get a double with a couple of those on and it will surely wake you up.

I'm getting excited too. It will be another great event this year!

URGENT MESSAGE!!!!

Unfortunately I just had a competitor inform me that he won't be able to bring his boat and motor to the competition. This really leaves me in a tight bind, as I'm now short one boat and motor (there's now not enough boats and motors, so it's now not possible for all of the competitors to participate at this event), so I desperately need to know if someone can arrange to borrow a 12 or 14 foot boat and/or a gas motor from one of your friends; relatives; or acquaintances, and bring or arrange to have it delivered to the competition.

Your help would be greatly appreciated and would help to make it possible for everyone to participate at next week's championship...

Thank-you for your consideration and assistance on this very urgent matter,
Todd

Please note the following items:

Boat Safety Kits:
Boat Safety Kits are required for all of the boats, and should be checked so as to include the following items:
1. One PFD per occupant
2. One manual propelling device (paddle or oar)
3. One bailer or water pump
4. One watertight flashlight (I carry a spare in my gear bag as well in case of failure)
5. One buoyant heaving line of at lest 15m
6. A sound signal device (whistle) that can be heard a 1/2 mile away

Canadian Tire has them on sale at the moment for only $14.99: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Marine/MarineSafety/PRD~0798598P/Fox+40+Classic+Boat+Safety+Kit.jsp?locale=en

Pleasure Craft Operator's Card:
Boat operators should also ensure that they remember to bring along your boat operator licenses or go online and apply for one if you don't already have one (the test takes 3 hours to complete): http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/?gclid=CNT024SIzrcCFTFgQgodQlIA2A

PFDs (Life Jackets, vests, collars, and other CSA Approved devices):
1. All competitors are responsible for providing and wearing a CSA Approved personal flotation device.
2. PFDs must be worn at all times while near the water's edge or in a boat.
3. Please contact Todd Oishi if you need to borrow one: info@lochstyleflyfishing.com

Drop me a txt and we'll try and hook up today. If not I can bring it up with me.

Thanks Andy! That would be very helpful and appreciated by the youths! The youths will all be staying at Tunkwa Lake Resort, so they should be easy to find.

They've been instructed to act like sponges, but respect the privacy aspect of the "secret" and team patterns that other competitors are kind enough to share with them.

Great event, once again. A big thanks to Todd, his wife Robin, Mike Ohata and his wife Jenny, and all the volunteers that help out at the mine, organizing, cooking, and cleaning up. There's a lot of behind the scenes work there that we sometimes forget about. Jenny and Robin do a lot to get the session standings up, and a lot of organizing for the silent auction too. Awesome job!

And big thanks to the youth team for coming out this year. I had a great time fishing with Mattia, and I know that the rest of my team (Riseform) had a great time fishing with the other youth members. I hope that you can all come back again next year.

Thank-you to the 60 competitors (12 teams) and volunteers that participated at this year's North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championship. Competitors came from as far away as Scotland and both sides of the continent to attend this year's championship. We even had 7 Youth Team members competing this year.

There was 1078 rainbow trout caught and released during the five, 3-hour sessions at this year's championship (and just about as many dropped), but more importantly, this year's event raised approximately $30,000.00 for the B.C. Children's Hospital, which brings the 4 year running total for funds raised through this event to an impressive total of nearly $100,000.00!

I hope to see all of you again at next year's event, and wish to extend an invitation to any countries that wish to send teams or individuals to next year's North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championship. The tentative dates for the 2015 North American Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships are June 10-13, 2015.

Please contact Todd Oishi at: info@lochstyleflyfishing.com to register or for more details.

Here are the individual and team scores:

I had a very good time during the championship, despite my first two session results on Tunkwa.

Thanks to a few people I came to realize that a "good session" is more determined by how you fished, versus the amount of fish measured and in the trough.

I am glad I was able to participate at this event, it was on my list for years! I was amazed how well it was organized, big thanks for Todd and everybody else who was involved.

Congratulations to the medal winners and it was great to see how teams could turn around things - like the Cormorants - and how other teams work hard as a team - The Flytastic Five - to win medals.

It was great to meet with Alisdair Mair and learn a few things from him. I really enjoyed to meet new people and see old friends!

Important notice:

Just a reminder and notice for anyone if they did in fact have an over-sized motor for last week's competition session on Tunkwa Lake. Boats with engines over 9.9hp are not be permitted on Tunkwa Lake, and thus, aren't permitted for the sessions that are held on Tunkwa Lake.

Next year, all competitor's boats will have to be presented for inspection in order to ensure that they conform to this regulation. Ther are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.

Thanks,
Todd

Waiting on Todd to post the final fifth session, but I am happy with the surge I put on at Trojan.

Unfortunately I couldn't make up for the 24 placing points from Tunkwa.

I am happy and not happy to say group B was a beast this year!!! That is two years in a row I have been in the group that has caught the most fish overall. This is positive as I have to stay sharp and negative as I don't get to have my 10 minute nap during the sessions ::)

Who does these draws anyways? And with some new rods and gamers it is not going to get any easier! :o

Here's an update from Elizabeth Grisenthwaite of Tech Highland Valley Copper Partnership:

To all 2014 North American Loch-Style Competitors,

It was another successful year for the 2014 North American Loch-Style Championship! Thank you competitors for your support in raising funds for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Mining for Miracles campaign. Attached you will find a newsletter documenting this year’s event.
We welcome all feedback at HVC.Feedback@teck.com.

Have a safe and fun summer!

Jacqui & Lisa

"Thank you 2014 North American Loch-Style competitors for your support in raising funds for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation through the Mining for Miracles campaign.

Loch-Style registrations committed prior to the Teck Celebrity Pie Throw, donations, live and silent auction contributions and a donation from Teck Resources enabled us to be successful in raising $28,870 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

On a lighter note Chris Dechert our General Manager did take a pie in the face during the Mining for Miracles
campaign. Together the Zinc/Copper Business Unit Pie and Loch-Style event raised over $206,000 for the Foundation.

Thank you everyone Lisa & Jacqui "

Your feedback on the event is greatly appreciated HVC.Feedback@teck.com
