Title: Caught this guy today. What the heck is it?
Post by: Kevin Cucheron on December 07, 2016, 05:30:53 PM
Mike L. and I braved the sub zero weather and hit a local flow today. Actually wasn't that cold despite the guides freezing up and the wades getting frozen stiff.

Caught this guy and still not sure what it is. Mike L. Is pretty sure it's a Coho Jack. What do you think?

It was clipped.

Looks like a rainbow too me. Was there any black in the mouth? From the picture it looks like a white mouth and if it is clipped then obviously a steelhead.

It does look like a trout except that it's top lip was curved down and it had a greenish tinge to it. In addition it hardly fought at all

It is definitely a male and that longer bent snout is a sign of that. Looks to have a slight tinge of pink behind the gill plate which is a trait of a rainbow. As for the not fighting hard, water is cold now and he also may have been moving. Or maybe he is just a lame fish. Some fish wow you, other's don't.  :)

The spotting to me looks coho. Only on the top of the tail and slightly thicker spots on the back. Pointy lower jaw I think suggests it being a coho jack.

I think mike is right.
