Here are the final results for the 2012/2013 West Coast Rivers Winter League - based on the top 4 finishes of each competitor; 6 competitions; and a total of 30 competitors/participants:

Congratulations to the medalists, and to those who came out and braved the unpredictable weather and challenging fishing conditions!

Medalists (left to Right): Randy Patton (bronze); Todd Oishi (gold); and Russell Miller (silver)

Point System for the West Coast Rivers Winter League:
The formula for the point system is based on 100 points for each competitor that is competing in that particular competition, with a divisor of 4 for 1st place; 5 for 2nd place; 6 for 3rd place. The divisors are then increased for each placing below the 25%, 50%, and 75% marks. This formula will reward the top quarter of the group with the highest percentage of the points for their individual performances at the competition.

Every competitor will be awarded points (regardless of their placing) for just showing up and learning from the experience. Here's an example of the calculations of points that are awarded in a competition with 12 competitors:

1st –   300 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 4 = 300 points)
2nd –  240 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 5 = 240 points)
3rd –  200 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 6 = 200 points)
4th –  150 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 8 = 150 points)
5th –  120 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 10 = 120 points)
6th –  100 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 12 = 100 points)
7th –    80 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 15 = 80 points)
8th –    67 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 18 = 67 points)
9th –    57 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 21 = 57 points)
10th –  48 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 25 = 48 points)
11th –  41 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 29 = 41 points)
12th –  36 points (100 points × 12 competitors ÷ 33 = 36 points)

Fish point system:
15cm to 25cm = 1 fish point
Over 25cm = 2 fish points

Overall Standings on the West Coast Rivers Winter League's Leader Board:
The individual scores that are recorded on the Winter League's Leader Board will consist of the cumulative total of points that a competitor has acquired at each competition. The Top 4 finishes of each individual will ultimately determine their overall score and placement on the Leader Board.

This system will allow members of the League the opportunity to improve their scores while culling a poor performance (hey, it happens to us all), and the ability to maintain their standings on the Leader Board in the event that they're unable to attend all 6 competitions.

Ties on the West Coast Rivers Winter League's Leader Board will be broken by fish points, and then, if necessary, by the number of fish caught for those competitors (for their Top 4 finishes only).

lol. You did real great Ross, especially for being your first river competition. At least you were lucky enough to have hooked into a few of them. :)

Actually you'll have to watch out for everyone (I personally wouldn't rule out anyone ;) ) as it'll be fairly easy for anyone to catch up and take the lead, due to the fact that an individual's final score is based on their 4 highest finishes throughout the Winter League's 2012/2013 season.

The long-range weather forecast for the next competition looks much more favourable (better water levels and clarity), which will make the fish more active and the fishing much more productive and enjoyable.  :)

Glad somebody has confidence in me. Somehow for some reason the fish seem to know I 'need' one so they stay away from me during comp. Maybe a diffeerent hat and dark sun glasses. ???

Saved this to my hard drive cause I don't know when I'll ever be second again in my lifetime. Wait I'm second at home all the time when I climb past the kids and cats - I'm usually running a DISTANT 6th. Wait that's 7th I forgot to count the wife which may put me back to 8th after the mail man... :P

Here are the current standings for the 2012/2013 West Coast Rivers Winter League - based on the results of the first 4 competitions, with a total of 27 competitors/participants:

It's a tight race, where a strong finish at either of the 2 remaining competitions of the Winter League could dramatically change the standings on the Leader Board after the results of of these competitions are added to it. Keep in mind that the top 4 point finishes of each competitor will determine their final results on the Leader Board, so the results may change just slightly - or not at all - for those of us who have already recorded 4 competitions on the Leader Board...

Check out the points that will be awarded for the placings at this competition (based on 20 competitors in attendance):
1st place=  500 points
2nd place= 400 points
3rd place= 333 points
4th place= 286 points
5th place= 250 points
6th place= 200 points
7th place= 167 points
8th place= 143 points
9th place=  125 points
10th place= 111 points
11th place= 95 points
12th place= 83 points
13th place= 74 points
14th place= 67 points
15th place= 61 points
16th place= 53 points
17th place= 48 points
18th place= 43 points
19th place= 39 points
20th place= 36 points

Here are the current standings for the 2012/2013 West Coast Rivers Winter League - based on the results of the first 5 competitions, with a total of 30 competitors/participants:

And just to make things more interesting and add a bit of drama to this competition...

It's been a very tight race between Todd Oishi and Russell Miller for Gold and Silver, and these 2 positioned aren't set in stone, as Russell can move past Todd's score and take home the individual gold medal if he can win the 6th and final competition of the Winter League (based on 24 competitors), in fact, we expanded the registration last night to accomodate 24 competitors at the next competition, which would allow Russell to generate enough points to have the chance to win the Gold.

The silver medal is still possible for either Randy Patton or Randy Paskall if either of them can finish in 1st place at this final competition - Oh the drama!!!

A Bronze Medal finish is still achieveable by any competitor within the Top 19 positions, by simply finishing in 1st place at the next competition, and a 2nd or 3rd place finish will make it a possibility for any of the competitors that are currently sitting in the Top 13 positions.

As well.... a 1st place finish from anyone at this competiton could potentially bump them up the Leader Board and into the Top 5 positions. This one will really come down to the wire...

Keep in mind that the top 4 point finishes of each competitor are being used to determine their final results and position on the Leader Board, so some of the results may change only slightly, or not at all, for the competitors that have already recorded 4 or more competitions on the Leader Board...

Check out the points that will be awarded for the placings at the final competition, which takes place on Sunday, April 14, 2013 (based on 24 competitors):

1st place=  600 points
2nd place= 480 points
3rd place= 400 points
4th place= 343 points
5th place= 300 points
6th place= 267 points
7th place= 218 points
8th place= 185 points
9th place= 160 points
10th place= 141 points
11th place= 126 points
12th place= 114 points
13th place= 100 points
14th place= 89 points
15th place= 80 points
16th place= 73 points
17th place= 67 points
18th place= 62 points
19th place= 56 points
20th place= 51 points
21st place= 47 points
22nd place= 44 points
23rd place= 40 points
24th place= 36 points

I'd also like to sincerely thank everyone that participated and made this such a successful event, which ultimately proved to be a superb learning experience for all and especially the members of the Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team.

I hope that everyone enjoys the springtime and summer months, and I'll see all of you (and hopefully a few more new faces) at the competitions when the West Coast Rivers Winter League resumes in the fall!!

Cheers,

Please note that we will be using a new point system for the 2013/2014 West Coast Rivers Winter League, which will reflect the degree of difficulty that is often associated with catching and landing larger size fish, and should help to some of the break ties at these competitions.

The new system for the 2013/2014 West Coast Rivers Winter League will be as follows:
1 point for fish under 20cm
2 points for fish 20cm to 30cm
3 points for fish over 30cm

Thank-you and see you at the first river competition of this series in November...

Way to go Todd, Russell and Randy!!! Nice try Randy #4  - so close .  Special mention to our own Motley Crew'r - Johnybuck - 6th with only 3 comps - and the first season he has tried real "competitive" river methods.  Now if I were a bit younger, and didn't have to take the BC Ferry for every comp - I might just give it a go next year.  Keep me in mind Todd.

Please note that the score of Tyler Wilkinson was missed in the original posting of the Leader Board, and the necessary corrections have been made to the Leader Board. Tyler finished 16th overall, which bumped the competitors below 16th place down one placing.

Well done Tyler, and my apologies for the error.

Cheers,
Todd
