Nice job Gary.  Would you say that this is effective anywhere even where there may not be any significant number of leaches present?

Yes I would Scott, mostly because it can easily represent other creatures such as pin fry and damsels. You may have to trim the tail back a bit to get the appropriate length. But that is the beauty of simple flies that are tied in the round and focus a bit more on size, silhouette and profile. Many creature have a bit of over lap in there hydrodynamic profile, which is simply a tear drop shape. That can be adjusted to by increasing or decreasing the length of the pattern.
