Fish & Photos - 2014
« on: January 03, 2014, 04:48:05 PM »
First time out this year and  a "hat trick" of three species. Coho, Cuttie and Rainbow. The Coho gave my little 3wt ESN a good run but it won out in the end. I was going to break it off, since it was pretty dark, but it was the first fish I hooked in 2014, so that might have destroyed my luck for the whole year!!!

It was cold, the water was higher than I expected and pretty cloudy, so I was happy to get these few fish. The Rainbow was a surprise, since there are supposed to be none in this little river.

The little bit of sun that reach the river was highly appreciated.

Looking forward to a lot more this year.

I apologize in advance of my crappy picture taking.

The net I have is more of a hindrance then a help due to size, can't wait for my new one.

Anyway first rainbow of 2014.  Got this after working my way down from a spot I lost a large cuttie due to crappy knot tying.
After the 3rd cast I remembered what Ross told me at the youth competition, so I let it hang and this fish just hammers my nymph.

And the first landed cuttie of 2014.  This was one of those I do not know why I set the hook I just did.  It certainly was a good idea.

I chase the allure of standing in a river, casting dries in an attempt to watch that beast come up and take my fly.  Then I usually blow it by setting the hook to soon....

Got my first fish of the new year today on one of the local flows.  Not the typical fish for the ESN 2100 while nymphing, but sometimes the combination still works fine as long as the steelhead agrees and cooperatives somewhat!  I had my youngest son Jason with me today and I don't think he really realized I had a fish on till a passerby stopped and offered to take a picture for me with my camera (thanks again by the way!) - he was too busy playing in the dirt.  Lol!

Beautiful fish!  Nature does a good job.

The large Frabill net is dong a great job thus far.

Very nice fish indeed!! Wish I was feeling good enough to fish this weekend. Today looked to be prime conditions for it...

Talk about being lucky enough to live in this part of the country where we don't have to ice fish!!  Lots of great trout, a steelhead and a couple of Coho. Things are looking up for 2014. Nice Steelhead with your 2wt ESN Chris, my 3wt also handled a few quite nicely last Spring.  Lets hope we don't hook a 15 pounder on Sunday.  Looking forward to seeing everyone fishin in the rain.  Here's another pic of a nice 17' Searun, best of 4 caught yesterday.

My second fish of the year (didn't take a pic of my New Year's Day fish). Picked this up in high dirty water on the fourth...

Aaron

(BTW I just put an old fly in its yap so don't try using this one  ;))

Here is a great resident rainbow taken from some really skinny water on one of the comp beats.

If someone says you fish too much, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Nice fish Kevin! How well did it fight in such skinny water?

It was a good fight with some jumps but honestly I thought it would be a bit harder in the faster part of that run. I have recently caught some whitefish on the Stave in faster water that put up a better fight. I was surprised to notice on this fish that the belly was quite soft. Any ideas why?
