Fluoro vs Mono Tippets

Fluoro vs Mono for Euro nymphing tippet?  What are your pros and cons comparing the 2 types and which brands get the nod or warning to leave on the shelf?

Thanks
Scott

I prefer fluorocarbon for nymphing, as it possesses a higher strength /diameter ratio than mono. It's also more abrasion resistant.

I personally prefer Rio's Fluoroflex Plus for my competition needs, but have played around with a few samples from Jaxon, Frog's Hair, and Trout Hunter as well. Just find the one that you have the most confidence in, and stick with it.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Todd

Fluoro for 5x and heavier.  Sinks better and the fish don't seem to mind!

6x and below I switch to Stroft or a few other brands unless fishing gin clear water.  Once you get into the 6.5-8x diameter and below realm, a little bit of stretch is really nice to have!

What brand are you currently using, Scott? And how has it been working for you?

I like the consistency and strength of Raven fluoro.  I have used it for years of float fishing tippet for steelhead.  I'm sure that they don't manufacture it but have it spooled with their name.  So as I started euronymphing it is what I have been using and have been happy with so far.  It is labelled as pound test not 5x, 6x etc.  I typically use the 3.4 or 4.5 lb test and have not had any problem handling any fish on my 11ft 4wt.

I don't really have a reason to switch but if there is something that works better then I would be interested.  Thanks guys

I'm using Soldarini's fluoro and for me it's hard to use something else. Not saying that it is the best ;-)

Dont believe everything you read and obviously things change batch to batch but here is an old but interesting comparison of tippets

The interesting things i see in this report is how well Stroft GTM does (especially knotted strength/diameter (better than the flouros) and one of the main reasons ive been giving it a go.. The other interesting thing is the results of the "J knot" which has been commented on in other posts.
